The other day, my dishwasher stopped working. Truly, it was
kind of devastating, especially for a guy who loathes washing dishes. In the
past, I would have picked up the phone, placed a service call, and been done
with it. But I’ve learned about something recently, and I’ve figured out that
this thing’s educational aspects can apply to virtually every area of life.
That thing is YouTube.
Laugh if you want. Maybe I’m a bit behind the times, but I
don’t care. I’ve recently discovered the amazing educational powers of YouTube,
and I need to go on about it for a few minutes.
YouTube saved my dishwasher, and it saved me a lot of money. I
simply got online, typed in what my problem was, and voila - there was a
tutorial on YouTube that went through the repair step-by-step. I wrote down the
parts I needed, picked them up, watched the video again, and in no time my
dishwasher was functional once again.
Of course, this got me thinking about other educational videos
that might be out there. And lo and behold, there are a TON of tutorials and
guides and how-to’s about voice over. I can tell you with no shame at all that
I spent the next several hours watching my fellow actors share their knowledge
and skills with the masses.
Not only was this very entertaining, it was also incredibly
informative - and I didn’t have to attend a seminar or take an acting class or
go to a workshop to get all this great information. (Not that those aren’t
excellent sources of info, because they are, and you should be utilizing them
as well.)
I guess my point here is that we, as voice over actors,
whether we’re new to the business or old dogs trying to learn new tricks, have
access to a wealth of information unlike anything experienced in history. I’m
sure some of my younger counterparts have already discovered this, but for guys
and gals like me that have been at it for awhile, it was certainly an
eye-opener to see all this knowledge out there being offered freely.
If you haven’t checked out some of the voice over tutorials on
YouTube, I highly recommend it. Not only are these videos interesting and informative,
you get a whole new perspective - and in a new format - that really makes you
stop and think about yourself as an actor. This is good for personal and
professional growth, and it’s never a bad thing to pick up new tricks, is it?
So check it out. And if
you need your dishwasher fixed, I may be able to help with that too.
